 We've touched upon this topic before, but I wanted to go into it a little deeper today, and that's the mental shield. The concept of the mental shield is that. While we are awake and alert, we have a system of defenses that keep us safe in this world, and our defense mechanisms are up and going every time we are awake.
And you can tell the degree to which that mental shield, those defenses are up based upon the tension in your body. And it's not that it's bad or wrong to have a mental shield, it's just the way it is. You can have a light mental shield or you can have a very heavy mental shield, but if you're awake, you're gonna have some sense of a mental shield while you're living in this world.
That mental shield is fabulous for certain purposes, such as making you feel safe, keeping your status quo about what you perceive reality to be intact. It makes it challenging when you're wanting to work magic, however, because that mental shield protects. Your deep mind from having arbitrary thought forms be deposited into the deep mind.
Imagine if every passing thought produced a reality and physical form that we would have no way of enjoying our three-dimensional experience here. If you stopped thinking about the sun, it might disappear. If you stopped thinking about your foot, it might disappear, et cetera. So the idea of the mental shield, so to keep status quo.
Is to keep everything in your deep mind protected. It's sometimes called the guardian at the gate. The problem with the guardian at the gate is that it protects what it believes. It protects your current belief system and keeps it solid in order to change your reality. In order to impregnate your deep mind with a new thought form and change your reality, you need to bypass this guardian at the gate.
The way we do that is through some level of trance. When you go to sleep at night, your mental shield comes down. When your consciousness is gone, your mental shield is gone. And so a lot of people think, well then I can just do sleep programming, except for sleep programming. As much as everybody tells me it works.
I don't buy it because it's the job of the conscious mind to do the planting of the seeds. If it were possible to do sleep programming, you could go to sleep and have all of your professor's lectures play, and then you'd wake up and you'd know everything and you'd get a good grade. But that doesn't work.
I know people have tried it, but it doesn't work. You have to have your conscious mind be involved in the process. So while sleep is good for many things, it's not good for. Engaging in spell casting, so your conscious mind has to be involved. Your conscious mind is the gardener, if you will, and your deep mind is the garden that's called weeds.
The garden will plant itself, but it's gonna plant itself based on your current belief system. So if you want something to change, you need to be able to bypass that guardian at the gate. A lot of people think that their lives are static. It's like nothing ever changes for me. I can't seem to get things to change.
It's always the same thing, especially if it's a problem. Let's say money is the problem. I never am able to make enough money. It's always the same, but that's not true. It's always different. It's just that it's the same seeds that are germinating over and over again. You get the same crop over and over again.
You haven't changed the seeds that are being planted. Or if you want to use the analogy of a film projector, you're watching the same movie over and over again. So it seems like it doesn't change, but it is changing. It's just changing into the same thing. That should feel like good news. If you're one of those people that think, I can never get something to change, you get it to change every day.
It's just that it's changing into the same thing. So our goal then with magic is to change the seed thought, change the thought form, and when that thought form gets changed and accepted by the Deep mind, just like any seed that gets accepted into fertile Earth, then something new starts to come forth.
So in order to lower that mental shield, to lower that guardian at the gate, in order to let the seed be accepted by the deep mind, we have to lower that mental shield. And we do that by relaxing the body and the mind. I. That's why we say it's the quiet mind. That is the powerful mind. When your mind is quiet and your body is peaceful, that's the optimal environment to work your magic.
Any kind of spells that are cast, when the mind is quiet and the body is relaxed, are very powerful spells. But if your mind is racing and your body is tense, chances are. No matter how many times you repeat an affirmation, no matter how many candles you burn or what kind of incense you burn, you're not going to get the change that you desire.
So the best thing for anybody that is serious about magic to do is to have some sort of daily practice where they practice relaxing their bodies. They practice focusing their minds, and it doesn't need to be any particular technique. Now, I love the magic minute technique 'cause it's just so simple. It helps you to focus the mind.
And when your mind is focused, your mind gets quiet. So that magic minute technique is simply taking a phrase, I use the phrase blessed be. Similar to transcendental meditation, where in my mind, while I'm inhaling, I think the word blessed. And while I'm exhaling, I think the word be, and anytime my mind wanders, which it will, I gently bring it back to that inner mantra of blessed be over and over again.
And while I do that, I do my best to keep my body relaxing deeper and deeper. And you know, a lot of people tell me I can't relax my body. I can't, and my response to them is, yes, you can. It's your body. It has to obey you, but it will take practice. So don't worry about having the perfect trance. Don't worry about having the perfect relaxation.
Just look at relaxing the tension in your body a little bit. If you think about the modern understanding of brainwaves, those delta waves are an indicator that your mental shield is completely up. Alpha waves, you're slightly relaxed. You're in just a, a slight relaxation. And then your mental shield is very porous.
It's very down the theta waves. Your mental shield is way down, but you're still awake. And then those delta waves, your mental shield's all the way down, but you have no consciousness. You have a lack of consciousness. So that's not. The ultimate goal is to be unconscious because then you can't work your magic.
So our goal is to just have some relaxation, and you don't have to worry about exact brainwaves. Don't do that to yourself. It really doesn't matter if it's alpha or theta. None of that matters. All that matters is that you're somewhat relaxed, that you're somewhat at ease, that your mind is somewhat quiet, and that's when your deep mind is amenable to taking those new thought forms.
And then it's just a matter of technique that you're using to plant the seed. That can be a visualization, that can be something that you're doing with a spell on your altar, a pop it a candle, herbs, whatever it is that you're doing to create the image for your deep mind of what you want. Your deep mind is amenable to change when that mental shield is down and the way that your conscious mind plants The seed can be quite variable.
It can be visualizing something. It can be an affirmation or an incantation. It can be some sort of manipulation of objects on an altar. It is a symbolic gesture, like sympathetic magic, et cetera, but you do have to have some sense of relaxation, some sense of trance. Like I said, it doesn't need to be a deep trance.
Even a light trance is enough. Now, like I said, it's a very good idea for you to have some sort of daily practice where you relax your body and focus your mind because that way you can get into that state quickly. And I have a guided meditation, and it's part of the witchcraft beyond the basics course.
That is the witch's trance that many people find helpful. There's also the orb of light technique from the witch's primer, and the basic grounding and centering technique is also very good for a very light trance. So as long as your mental shield is slightly lowered, you are in a posture where you can start to work magic.
So you have to have that mental shield down somewhat. And then you have to have some sort of thought form being built. And like I said before, there's many different techniques and we have all kinds of techniques that we teach here. For that I. With Psalm Magic, it's a good idea to start out with a little bit of a relaxation, but the incantation frequently is a type of relaxation, and that's why it's good to speak that incantation out loud all the way through once without stopping because it tends to quiet the mind.
It tends to help you to relax the body even. So it's a good idea to start out with a little bit of a relaxation before you do that. And then when you're going back through the psalm for that second step, you're actually planting the seeds in the deep mind, and that's where that Psalm Magic formula has it all sort of built in to it.
There's two times in the day when your mental shield is already down, but you're conscious that's about the first 30 minutes in the morning when you wake up and right as you are drifting off to sleep. And it's a really good idea to take advantage of both of those times, and you don't have to necessarily take advantage of those times to cast a formal spell necessarily, but you can do something to either.
Bolster a spell that you have cast or just have whatever goal that you're working on. And what I like to do as I'm drifting off to sleep is just have a seed word. That I repeat mentally, softly to myself as I'm falling asleep. It could be wealth, it could be health, it could be success, it could be love, it could be harmony.
Whatever your goal happens to be, just gently repeat it over and over, silently in your mind as you're drifting off to sleep. And then in the morning, within that first 30 minutes or so, especially right. As soon as you wake up, if you can remember that same seed thought so much the better. But those first 30 minutes are wonderful.
If you like to do things like affirmations, journaling. Things like that because your deep mind is very amenable to change first thing in the morning. And so if you do some sort of morning meditation or morning visualization, or if you have the wherewithal to cast a spell first thing in the morning, many of us don't.
It's a very powerful time because your mental shield is naturally pretty low. And it takes, like I said, about. 30 minutes for the average person to get that mental shield to go up. Well that's an indicator that your mental shield is down. So be careful of the kinds of thoughts that you think and the kinds of decisions that you make during that period of time, because those are going to reinforce some of the thought forms that are already in there.
And if you want to change thought forms, that's a wonderful time to do it. I have a lot of different processes and techniques that I share, but some of those, like waning moon flips and things like that, or the process for solving problems where you ask yourself a question and then you just fill out the page with a bunch of answers, it's a wonderful time to do that because your deep mind is so amenable, not only to receiving information, but to giving up information.
So if you're looking to find some deep seated beliefs, you can just take out a piece of paper within that first 30 minutes and on the top of the paper, write your prompt. So for instance, if you're looking to uncover some beliefs that you want to change that are causing financial problems for you, you could start out the day by, uh, writing a prompt at the top of a clean sheet of paper and say, what I think about money is, or what I feel about money is.
Money is whatever your prompt happens to be. And then just see what the first thought comes to your mind without editing and write that down. And then keep doing that. Have a new thought for each line on that clean sheet of paper until you either start really repeating the same basic thoughts over and over again or until you reach the bottom of the page.
And then you can go through that and especially check off the ones that you get the biggest emotional reaction to. And flip 'em around. And it's not about necessarily convincing your deep mind that the new thought is true. It's cleansing your mind of those old thoughts. So for instance, if you had a bunch of thoughts about, money is evil, money's the root of all evil.
Money's hard, money never comes to me, whatever that that is, and you, and you notice that a few of those thoughts have a lot of charge, have a lot of emotional response to them. For instance, money is evil. Just write down on a clean sheet of paper, money's good, and then go through your list, especially with the ones that are the biggest emotional bugaboos for you.
Money's good. Money is easy. I always have enough money. Those kinds of thoughts. And again, we don't expect you to necessarily believe the new thoughts. We just want you to write them down, because what that's doing is it's cleaning out, it's weeding that garden and it's a wonderful thing to do first thing in the morning.
Just to write down a whole page of negative thoughts, or it doesn't have to be negative, but whatever comes up about any particular topic. And then flipping around the ones that you don't like to something else. And what you've basically done is weeded your garden so that when you do have some spells that you want to cast in regards to that topic, the ground has been laid, everything's ready.
And you can actually, IM. Plant a whole new thought form there, rather than planting that thought form on a ground that's not been tilled and a ground that's got a lot of weeds in it. Hopefully that makes sense. That's a wonderful thing to do first thing in the morning. There's a lot of benefit to just sitting in the presence of that lowered mental shield and not doing anything else, because as you relax, you're tuning into the vibration of your soul versus the vibration of your ego.
Your ego does not like relaxation. It's all about racing thoughts, tension, getting you distracted, getting you worried, getting you upset, getting you afraid. So when you are doing the opposite of those things and you're lowering that mental shield, you're basically lowering your ego for the time being.
And just sitting in the presence of that lowered mental shield puts you automatically in touch with the vibration of your soul. And the soul already is vibrating to the frequencies that are perfect for you in any area of your life. The soul already knows exactly what's gonna make you happy. The soul already knows what your so-called mission here is in this lifetime knows all the things that are going to bring you the most success.
It knows how to solve your problems. It's very clear on everything. You can think of that as your higher self or your superconscious mind. It knows what everything is. And so sometimes the best thing to do is not necessarily cast a spell, but to just sit in the presence of that lowered mental shield and that focused mind and let the superconscious mind do its thing.
Let it take over, and if you get into the habit of doing that once a day, a lot of the spells that you want to cast are unnecessary because things just start to work out for you in ways that you wouldn't have come up with on your own. The conscious mind really thinks that it knows everything. Conscious mind is the smallest part of the mind, but it really believes it's the smartest thing.
It's the power of decision. And so your conscious mind is important because it's the decider. Like we said, it's the one that plants the seeds, it's the decider. So if. You decide as a conscious mind to give your gardening chores over to your super conscious mind, sort of job it out. Your super conscious mind can do it for you, but it can't do it for you without your conscious mind's participation and permission.
So that's another beautiful. Way of dealing with this concept of the mental shield is to lower it and not do anything about it other than sit in the presence of that deep relaxation and that quiet mind and allow the super conscious mind to do everything for you. Your super conscious mind can do a lot for you.
But it's still up to you to say yes or no to everything that happens in your life. You can't just say, well, I'm just going to give this over to the super conscious mind and I'm, you know, just gonna go eat bon bons and watch bad tv. You have to allow yourself to be co-creating. You have to allow yourself to be a participant in it.
But a lot of times when we think about being a participant, we think that we have to be in charge of the whole thing, and frequently we get. Very stressed out and upset and create things that we don't want because we think that it's up to us. But when you start getting used to just sitting in the presence of this lowered mental shield, this deep relaxation where your mind is quiet, you realize that you don't have to do very much other than say yes or no.
It's almost like you're the chairman of the board. You don't have to do everything. Or if, let's say you owned the restaurant, you don't have to wait all the tables, you don't have to cook all the food, you don't have to bus all the tables, you don't have to seat all the people. You don't have to ring them up.
You don't have to do all the advertising. You don't have to do all of it yourself. Right? But you're the owner. And let's say you owned a chain of restaurants, so there's plenty for you to do, but you're basically your job as the owner and the CEO and the boss is to make the choices. To say yes, no, yes, no, yes, no.
And as you learn how to sit in these periods every day with your mental shield down and your mind clear and quiet, you learn how to say yes and no to the different areas of your life as they are presented to you. And it's a wonderful technique. It's a wonderful tool. A lot of people know about meditation, but they don't understand that meditation is something that can solve problems, because if you don't understand that it can solve problems, then you're not gonna let it.
It's not gonna be part of the equation. But if you can sit in that quiet mind, if you can sit in that relaxed body. For a few moments a day for the purpose of having things work out for you in certain areas of your life, they will just because you've allowed it to be that way and because you've considered the truth that that's a possibility for you.
Otherwise, you're just meditating for its own sake, which you know has its benefits, but why not take it one step further and allow that time that you spend in meditation to change your life for you as well? So there's several different ways to work. A lot of times people think in terms of high magic and low magic.
The idea of high magic is just letting the highest good work through us and low magic is. Making real clear decisions and having specific goals about things. And you can do both. You don't have to do one or the other. You can do both. You can have what are called preferences in your life. The higher self comes in and says, you know, we're gonna, we're gonna do this for you.
And you say, yeah, but can we have it blue? Can we let it be blue? Of course we can. So you see, you're co-creating. You're not just saying, okay, you do it for me by yourself. You're saying, okay, I love what you're doing here. Now let's do it in a different way. Can I have a Mercedes? Is that okay? Instead of just whatever kind of car?
Sure you can, right? So you're getting involved in the thought forms, but it's a co-creation rather than you thinking, you as the sorcerer have to come up with everything yourself. And this is all done as a part of a. Lowered mental shield where your mind is quiet and you've invited that understanding of that higher self or that soul vibration to come in and you and your soul are working together as a unit.
So I recommend, if you're not used to doing it, do some sort of daily meditation. And I think first thing in the morning is the best time to do it. I love doing it first thing in the morning that for one thing, then it just, I don't forget and it's just done. And not only that, I'm taking advantage of that first 30 minutes when my mental shield's already sort of down anyway, so I don't have to work so hard getting it down another time to that it, it's good to do for many people is before they go to sleep.
I like so many others tend to fall asleep in my meditations if I do that. My main meditations are in the morning, but you can also do meditations during the day. You can lower your mental shield during the day. It just takes a little bit more time and a little bit more commitment because you're in the middle of the day, usually you're already operating at that main delta level of brainwave, so it's gonna take you a little bit more commitment to get that relaxation and to get that quiet mind.
But it's especially helpful if you happen to be upset. About something. But you see, if you've been meditating in the morning on a regular basis, it's so much easier in the middle of the day to just excuse yourself for a moment and get that mental shield down for a moment and allow that higher self to come in and change things for you because.
You're primed for it because you've practiced that idea of relaxation and quieting the mind is a practice, and so when people say, I can't do it, it's because they haven't practiced enough. Yes, you can. Anybody can do this. There's not one person who can't lower their mental shield and quiet their mind.
It requires no tools, but sometimes the best you can come up with is 30 seconds of relaxation in a quiet mind, and that's fine. And then maybe you can add another second the next day and another second the next day. And gently, slowly build that up over time until you get 15 or 20 minutes at a time. And maybe you'll never get that much time.
Maybe you'll only get five minutes, but five minutes in the morning with your mental shield down, where it's just you and your higher self with your mind. Quiet is all that it takes for that higher self to be in charge. Of your mind for the whole day, so that if you do have something that comes up, it's so much easier to get it turned around than if you didn't have that practice to begin with.
I encourage you to give that a shot if you haven't already started to do some sort of meditation practice. I. I also recommend that you start to take advantage of that time in the morning and that time as you're going to sleep, to use that to plant some seeds into your deep mind. It's a very powerful practice, and it's so simple.
It's so simple that a lot of people just fluff it off as not anything interesting because there's no. Ens, there's no incense. There's nothing complicated, so it can't work, but it does work, and all it takes is you deciding what you want and distilling that down to a single keyword, and then repeating that keyword over as you fall asleep and then repeating that keyword in the morning as you wake up the soon, as soon as you can remember it.
And it may take a little while for you to see the results from that. Just like it'll take you a little while if you planted some seeds to get a tomato vine, but you will get it if you take care and you keep doing it. So there's that. And then also reminding yourself that when you are going to cast a spell.
You make sure that you do it within the context of a lowered mental shield and a quiet mind. Otherwise, you're just spinning your wheels and you won't get the desired results. So it's very important that you take the time to quiet the mind and the body before you cast a spell. And if you can't quiet the mind and relax the body, then it's time to practice that on a daily basis, because then you're going to notice that your spell casting becomes much more effective as a result.
