Today we are working on Psalm 42. Some traditional magical uses for Psalm 42 include receiving spiritual guidance, vitality, reconciling a love relationship, prophetic dreams, having the higher self guide the personality, and opening channels of opportunity. I like that one. Let’s open channels of opportunity.

To work Psalm magic is very simple, easy, and effective. We take the Psalm in question and speak it out loud all the way through once without stopping. We call this an incantation. After we finish that, we go back through the Psalm and take one verse at a time in order. We search for hidden meanings, often called occult meanings, that lie within each verse. As we dig for those and uncover them, we apply what we find to the situation we’ve brought to the Psalm. In doing so, we dislodge all the magic seeds available for this spell, planting them in the depths of our mind, where they take root, grow, blossom forth, and bear fruit after their kind. That is exactly what you and I are going to do together right now with Psalm 42.

As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me, for I had gone with the multitude. I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holy day.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted in me? Hope thou in God! For I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill of Mizar. Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.

I will say unto God, my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? Why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me, while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God? Why art thou cast down, O my soul, and why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God, for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

This starts out with an image of a deer searching for water where the brook has gone dry, panting after water. We liken that image to our need for the presence of the infinite in our lives. When we don’t have any water to drink, air to breathe, or food to eat, our minds suddenly understand what’s important in that moment because our bodies are crying out for those essentials. That is what we must recognize our soul cries out for when we don’t allow ourselves to feast upon the presence of the infinite, to be quenched by it.

"My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?" The soul doesn’t really thirst for God because the soul is always satisfied. What the Psalms mean by "soul" is the deep mind. If we’re not experiencing the presence of the infinite, the ego mind distracts us, pointing to something else we think we need. The ego’s entire game is "seek but don’t find," searching for satisfaction in places it doesn’t exist. The only way to achieve anything is by turning to the presence of the infinite—our source, which never runs dry. That fountain of the infinite is always within us.

"My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say to me, 'Where is thy God?'" Water is the main symbol of this Psalm. At first, it symbolizes the deer’s thirst for the infinite. Now, it represents our tears, which flow because we’ve been searching for satisfaction in the wrong places. The ego taunts us, saying, "Where is your God?" It points to external things—money, relationships, possessions—as the source of happiness. But these voices only lead to sadness because they pull us away from what truly quenches our thirst: the presence of the infinite.

"When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me, for I had gone with the multitude. I went with them to the house of God with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holy day." This verse reminds us of times when things worked out, when we felt at one with our source. That feeling of satisfaction, regardless of external circumstances, is what we must remember and return to.

"Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted in me? Hope thou in God, for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance." This verse provides a formula for manifesting opportunities: experience the countenance of the infinite. The countenance, or face, symbolizes proof of identity. The face of the infinite is the good in our lives. By praising the good, we connect to the source, and our good expands.

"O my God, my soul is cast down within me. Therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan and of the Hermonites from the hill of Mizar." The tall things mentioned here can represent either big problems or great blessings, depending on our focus. By focusing on the good, we allow it to expand within us.

"Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts. All thy waves and thy billows are gone over me." Water symbolizes the infinite, which quenches, cleanses, and carries us to our desired destination. Trust in the infinite, even when it feels overwhelming.

"Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life." This verse teaches us to align our thoughts with the infinite day and night. By acknowledging the good in our lives, we connect to the infinite and allow it to expand.

"I will say unto God, my rock, why hast thou forgotten me? Why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?" The infinite never forgets us; it is we who forget the infinite. The enemy is the ego mind, which distracts us with unsolvable problems. By reorienting our minds to the infinite, we overcome the ego’s oppression.

"Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God, for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance and my God." This verse reiterates the formula: turn away from negative thinking, focus on the infinite, and praise the good in your life. By doing so, you open the floodgates for more good to flow into your life.
